Driving Totals Time Again 7-16-2012

Now that we are well into Driving Season it is time for an update.  These totals do include today’s hayfield and road drive with Luc and Galahad… here we go…

Luc along with Galahad has driven a total of 193 hours and 535.85 miles since they started driving together in the spring of 2009.  I actually started keeping track July 10th, 2006 when it was Luc, Dev and Liberty so of course not all this time/miles belongs to solely to Luc and Galahad.  According to Master Luc, Galahad is still a green horn driving donkey.

Merlin and Hank have driven a total of 75 hours and 152.5 miles, remember they were just started last spring.

The Grand Total is now 268 hours and over 688 miles which means by the end of the week I should have driven my goal of 700 miles!  Time to set a new goal, don’t ya think?

Today’s drive was kept close to home for two reasons.  First was checking adjustments and wanting to be close to a spot to unhitch and redo if needed, and it was.  I would be surprised if anything else is needed to get this team back road ready.  The second reason was weather related.  We got into a couple nice little 60 degree showers and found the new brim on the helmet really did a great job to keep the rain off.  The shorts did nothing for the icy wind and cold rain though.

We took it slow and easy as I really wanted to watch how the pole and quarter straps were working with the traces.  Going down the road the traces are running tight and the underneath straps are loose and that is exactly what I wanted to see.  Going up and down hills the straps needed to do their magic act and they did!  I was even able to remove Galahad’s crupper, right now his harness is doing a whole lot better which makes Galahad a happy boy.

Luc received a few adjustments now that he has Quarter Horse length Quarter Straps instead of draft length straps.

Plans have changed and not sure if there will be a drive in the morning but look for us out there on the back roads of North Central Idaho again soon.

What we wouldn’t do for a nice cool rain here in Michigan. It’s unseasonably hot and terribly dry.

Gosh I wish I could send you ours. The wheat does not need it, in fact the high winds we are having right now will lay a bunch of it on the ground! We need some warm and dry…still have hay to cut! EEK!!!

It’s been high 90’s with no rain for weeks here in northern Illinois. I’m jealous of your 60 temps and rain! lol! Also jealous of your hours logged 🙂

I keep a log of my driving with 1 of my horses, too. I haven’t done that with the others, but I have some estimates that I hope are close.

My log with Chewbacca records number of drives since first hitch July 12,2011 (now at 86) and number of road miles logged (currently 81). I also log if we worked in the arena, on trail, or on the road, or did something special, like haul to a clinic or show.

I have a goal of 100 hours this year. So far, I’m only halfway there. Don’t think I’ll be making any ADS milestones this year, but it’s good to have the log all the same.

Another one after my own heart… I really enjoy keeping track and watching how it all adds up. My time is strictly time spent in the seat. We may be sitting and chatting or moving but it is time spent on the box! I would love to make 100 hours in a year of driving but it would have to be perfect weather and going almost everyday. Happy logging to you!
